What they are looking for

Young People's Theatre is casting Pete the Cat, a family musical based on the bestselling books by Kimberly and James Dean, directed by Sam Shankman. They are looking for strong non-Equity actor-singers for all five roles and their understudies: Pete, a tenor ages 20 to 39; Jimmy, a tenor ages 20 to 29; Olive, a mezzo ages 20 to 29; and Mom and Dad, ages 20 to 39. Rehearsals run during the day from January 11 to 29, and performances run February 6 through March 1 at the Greenhouse Theater Center. It is paid: $275 per rehearsal week, $35 per performance, and a $400 stipend for understudies. Prepare two sides and one song for your character and submit through the online form by October 28. Apply through the original listing.

How to approach it

Pick your role by vocal range first and age second: each part has a set voice type and an assigned song. The tone is kids' theater with a rock edge, so play the sides with energy and humor without tipping into cartoon. Rehearsals run daytime, 9:30 to 3, and there are weekday school matinees, so make sure your schedule allows it. Callbacks are the evening of November 2, so keep that night open.
