What they are looking for
The Drama Group, an all-volunteer community theater in Chicago Heights, is holding auditions for Choir Boy, Tarell Alvin McCraney's play about the choir at a boys' prep school. They are seeking strong Black singers ages 18 to 25 for the five student roles, a Black headmaster ages 45 to 65, a white teacher ages 30 to 55, and a choir ensemble, all 18 or older and able to play high schoolers. There is stepping, which will be taught in rehearsal. The play deals with mature themes, and an intimacy coordinator is on the team. This is a non-Equity production. It is unpaid. Auditions are November 15 and 16 with a one to two minute contemporary dramatic monologue and an a cappella gospel verse and chorus. Performances run February 12 to 21, 2027. Apply through the original listing.
How to approach it
Choose a traditional gospel song or hymn you know cold a cappella, with a verse and chorus that show pitch and feeling with no accompaniment. A contained contemporary monologue works well, ideally a young man wrestling with who he is. Even if you have never stepped, go anyway: they teach it. Read the content notice first, and ask how they handle intimacy if anything about it gives you pause.
It takes you to the original listing from The Drama Group: you apply there. Never pay to audition.
