What they are looking for
Actors Theater Series, with producers Tom McCoy and Cathy Rigby, is casting “Hairspray,” directed by Larry Raben. The Equity Principal Audition is Friday, November 13, from 11 AM to 7 PM in La Mirada, California. Roles include Tracy Turnblad, 18 or older to play a late teen, a mezzo-soprano with a strong, bright pop belt, and Edna, her mother, late 40s to 55, a bass or baritone role often played by a man in drag. Prepare a song from the show or in the same style, and bring sheet music plus your headshot and resume stapled together. It is paid, with a minimum of $1,154 per week. Rehearsals start March 16, 2027, and the run is April 2 to 25. Apply through the original listing.
Castina's tip
Pick a short cut of a 60s-style or pop belt song that shows energy and a sense of fun, because “Hairspray” runs on rhythm and joy. Bring sheet music that is clearly marked for the accompanist and rehearse your start beforehand. If you are going in for Edna, the key is playing the mother with warmth rather than as a caricature. Note that rehearsals are in March 2027 and that the audition is in La Mirada, even though the posting lists Fullerton.
