Quick answer: To get auditions in Atlanta, prepare your headshots, resume and reel or intro video. Then create profiles on Actors Access, Casting Networks and Backstage and submit yourself to the Georgia projects that fit you. Georgia offers a film tax credit of up to 30%, but production spending has fallen, so build credits in independent films, local theater and background work while you look for a franchised or well-vetted agent. Georgia is a right-to-work state, and union members still follow their union’s rules. Never pay anyone to get you an audition.
Atlanta is one of the main film and TV hubs in the United States. This guide goes deeper than our general guide on how to get auditions in the United States: why Georgia became a production hub, where Atlanta calls are posted, how union and non-union work differ and what to do in your first 90 days.
One clarification before we start. Casting and Acting is not an agency, a union or a source of US casting calls. The calls on our castings page come mostly from Latin America and Spain, so for Atlanta you will use the places described below.
Why did Georgia become a production hub?
Mostly because of incentives and infrastructure. According to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Georgia film tax credit is a 20% transferable credit. Projects that carry the Georgia logo or an approved alternative earn an extra 10% uplift, and the program has a $500,000 annual minimum spend, no annual cap and no sunset clause. The state says the incentive has been stable since 2005 and lists more than 4 million square feet of stage space and more than 10,000 filming locations on its film page.
Two studios show the scale. Trilith Studios, in Fayetteville, says it sits across more than 700 acres and lists productions shot there such as Moana, Superman and Captain America: Brave New World. Tyler Perry Studios is based in Atlanta. Work also happens outside the city: the state’s professional development page has listed crew calls for series in Stone Mountain and Senoia, so check the location before you accept a booking.
What do the numbers look like now?
Less strong than a few years ago. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on July 31, 2026 that productions spent about $2 billion in Georgia in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026. That was down from $2.3 billion a year earlier and less than half of the 2022 record of $4.4 billion. The state counted 280 productions, among them 130 television productions, 77 independent films, 54 commercials and 13 feature films. The newspaper called independent films, up 83% from the year before, the bright spot, and it blamed fewer greenlit projects, tighter budgets and rival incentive programs elsewhere (AJC).
For you, that means plenty of activity but real competition. Use the mix as a map. Television is the largest category, so learn how to get cast in TV shows. Commercials follow their own rules, which we explain in how to get commercial auditions. Independent films, the fastest-growing group, are a natural target for your own submissions.
Where are Atlanta casting calls posted?
Atlanta projects use the same platforms as the rest of the country. Our Los Angeles guide explains how breakdowns, submissions and self-tapes work, and Actors Access vs. Backstage vs. Casting Networks compares the platforms. Beyond them, look here:
- Atlanta casting companies: Hylton Casting, a full-service company based in Atlanta, lists current calls under Now Casting, background calls included, and links to a talent registration for its background database.
- The state’s film pages: Georgia’s professional development page has carried background casting calls. The Georgia Film Office’s staff listings are about locations and incentives, not casting, so do not send it your headshot.
- Local film groups: the Atlanta Film Society, a membership nonprofit, runs the Atlanta Film Festival each spring, plus workshops and a recurring showcase of short films by Georgia independent filmmakers called Locals Only. Events like these are where you can meet independent filmmakers.
- Local theaters: Atlanta theaters post their own calls. Actor’s Express, a nonprofit theater in West Midtown, has an Auditions link on its website.
A subscription pays for a platform’s service, never for an audition. If a call asks you for money, read how to spot a fake casting call.
How do you get cast in Georgia’s independent films?
Independent films are cast on the same platforms, so filter your searches by project type and location, and go where filmmakers gather, such as the Atlanta Film Society events above. SAG-AFTRA has low-budget agreements for student films, short films and micro-budget projects, so it is fair to ask whether a project is covered. Before you say yes:
- Get the shoot dates, your pay or deferment terms and the meals in writing.
- Ask where the film will be shown and for a copy of the finished footage for your reel.
- If you are a union member, accept only work that is covered by a SAG-AFTRA agreement.
- Never pay to be cast, and leave if anything feels wrong.
Do you need to be in the union to work in Atlanta?
You can start without joining. SAG-AFTRA has an Atlanta Local, and Breakdown Services posts both union and non-union projects. Read union vs. non-union acting and how to join SAG-AFTRA before you decide.
Georgia is a right-to-work state: its Code says no individual can be required, as a condition of employment, to be or remain a member of a labor organization (Georgia Code section 34-6-21). That limits what an employer or a contract can demand. It does not turn off the union’s own rules for its members. Under Global Rule One, members generally may not work for employers that have not signed a SAG-AFTRA agreement, and the union says members who break it can face discipline. Once you join, assume the rule applies in Georgia.
Can you work as a background actor in Atlanta?
Yes. Central Casting says applicants in Georgia, as in California, New York and Louisiana, must complete Form I-9, which confirms your identity and your authorization to work in the United States (Central Casting). Atlanta-based companies such as Hylton Casting also keep background databases. Check that registration is free before you send anything, and read our guide on how to become a background actor for what to expect on set.
How do you find a legitimate agent in Georgia?
Unlike California and New York, Georgia does not require a talent agency license. The Association of Talent Agents’ state-by-state guide (May 2024) says no professional license is required for agents and managers in Georgia, and it encourages readers to confirm with their state licensing division. So do your own checks:
- Franchise: SAG-AFTRA members can work only with franchised agencies, and the union’s Franchised Agents List can be searched by Local.
- Track record: the Federal Trade Commission advises you to ask for a list of the actors an agency has placed, contact references, search the company’s name with words like “scam” or “complaint” and get every promise in writing (FTC).
- Fees: the FTC says real agencies get paid after the client pays them, so never pay to be listed or to meet an agent.
Our guide on how to get a talent agent has the full plan.
Where can you train and meet filmmakers in Atlanta?
Training is optional, but classes are where you meet scene partners and directors. Three places whose sites we checked:
- The Alliance Theatre, a nonprofit theater at 1280 Peachtree Street NE, lists adult acting classes.
- Dad’s Garage, a comedy improv theater at 569 Ezzard Street SE, promotes six-week classes in improv, stand-up and sketch.
- The Atlanta Film Society offers workshops, including a four-hour acting workshop on character development.
If you want to understand the production side of a set, the state also points to the Georgia Film Academy, a University System of Georgia partnership that trains students for careers in film and digital entertainment.
Tip: Audit or take a single workshop before you commit to a longer course, and walk away from any class that promises you an agent or a role.
What does a realistic first 90 days look like?
Budget a few hours every week: time to read breakdowns and submit, time to record self-tapes when invitations arrive and one class or workshop session.
| Days | Focus | What to finish |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | Get ready | Headshots, a one-page resume and a short intro video or reel (see how to prepare your audition materials); free Actors Access and Casting Networks profiles; a background registration with a company you have checked; one workshop booked |
| 31 to 60 | Start working | Weekly submissions to roles that fit; your first self-tapes; independent film and theater auditions; your first events with the Atlanta Film Society |
| 61 to 90 | Get seen | Materials updated with new footage; agency research using the franchise list and the FTC checks; submissions that follow each agency’s own rules; a review of your log to decide which paid plan, if any, earned its price |
Keep going after day 90: auditioning is a habit you build.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to live in Atlanta to get auditions there?
You can begin from anywhere, because many auditions start as self-tapes. Still, Breakdown Services releases projects to people in specific regions, and you need legal authorization to work in the United States. Our guide for the United States covers work authorization. Move when you have materials, momentum and a plan.
Is Georgia still a good place for actors while production is down?
It is a smaller market than a few years ago, with about $2 billion in spending against a $4.4 billion record in 2022. Independent films grew 83% in the latest fiscal year, though, and the state credit has no annual cap and no sunset clause. Build credits here, then decide whether a bigger market makes sense.
Do I need SAG-AFTRA to work in Georgia?
You can start without joining. Breakdown Services posts both union and non-union projects, and Georgia’s right-to-work law means an employer cannot require you to join a union as a condition of employment. Think carefully before you join, because members must follow Global Rule One.
Does Georgia require talent agents to be licensed?
The Association of Talent Agents’ 2024 guide says no professional license is required for agents and managers in Georgia. That is why franchise status, references and a clear contract matter even more.
Where can I find Atlanta casting calls for free?
Start with a free Actors Access profile, a free Casting Networks account and the websites of Atlanta casting companies and theaters. Paid plans can wait until you know which calls fit you.
