Quick answer: if you want acting classes Atlanta offers for screen work, start with on-camera programs such as Catapult Acting Studios or Atlanta Workshop Players. Add improv at Dad’s Garage or Whole World, and stage-based training at the Alliance Theatre. Each school below links to its official class page, so you can check the current schedule before you sign up.
Atlanta is a working film and television town, so the training here leans toward the camera. That changes how you should shop for acting classes Atlanta offers. A class that ends with a scene on tape is closer to what a casting office will ask you for than a class that ends with a stage showcase. Stage and improv still matter, though, and the city has strong options for both.
This guide to acting classes Atlanta residents can take lists six places that show current classes for the public, grouped by what you want to get out of them. We left out schools whose sites show no recent dates. Schedules change every term, so treat each entry as a starting point and confirm details on the school’s own page. If you are still deciding how to judge a school, read our guide to choosing acting classes first.
Match acting classes in Atlanta to your goal
Before you look at schools, decide what you are missing. Someone who has never been on camera needs a different room than an actor with credits who wants to sharpen cold readings.
- New to acting: look for a no-prerequisite level, such as an On-Camera Baseline, Acting I or Beginner Improv.
- Booking screen work: choose a school with audition technique and taping built into the curriculum.
- Building confidence and listening: improv is the fastest way to get out of your head.
- Learning how a set works: a set-readiness program teaches the vocabulary and the etiquette.
On-camera acting classes in Atlanta
These schools are the closest match to the city’s film and television work. Expect a camera in the room and feedback on what the lens sees.
Catapult Acting Studios
Catapult teaches on-camera baseline and intermediate classes, rotating electives, audition technique, audition taping and private coaching. Adults 18 and over can start at the beginner level, because the On-Camera Baseline has no prerequisite. Level 3 is by referral or invitation only. There are also youth classes for ages 4 to 17 and a conservatory for ages 16 to 25 by audition.
Classes meet in person in 8-week sessions, with one-day to three-day workshops, camps and online options besides. The studio is at 1934 Cliff Valley Way NE, Atlanta 30329. One detail worth knowing: the adult program runs five 8-week sessions a year, and two of them fall in autumn. You can see the current list on the Catapult adult classes page.
Atlanta Workshop Players
This nonprofit says it has been teaching since 1981. Its catalog covers on-camera fundamentals, intermediate and advanced on-camera work, scene study, voice and movement, improv, voiceover and commercial acting. It serves kids from age 7, tweens, teens and adults.
Some programs are open, and Scene Study Deep Dive welcomes all levels. Others, such as the intermediate and advanced on-camera classes and the Pro programs, are by invitation or audition. The studio is in Roswell, a north Fulton suburb, at 1580 Holcomb Bridge Rd. Classes run on weekday evenings and Saturdays, and the 2026-27 term runs from August 10, 2026 to May 16, 2027. An “Audit a Class” option lets you watch before you commit. Start at the Atlanta Workshop Players classes page.
Aurora Theatre Academy
Aurora is in Lawrenceville, in Gwinnett County, so it is outside the city proper. The academy teaches acting, musical theatre, film acting, private voice lessons and monologue and audition coaching. Its Film Acting class for ages 16 and up meets on Monday evenings, 7:30 to 9:00 pm, from February 8 to April 2, 2027. A separate Film Acting class serves ages 10 to 15.
The theatre is at 128 E Pike St, and the sessions are 8 weeks long. That makes it a good fit if you live east of the city and want a short, weekday commitment. The page is Aurora Theatre classes and camps.
Improv acting classes in Atlanta
Improv sharpens listening, comfort with the unknown and quick choices. All of that carries into a callback room.
Dad’s Garage Theatre Company
Dad’s Garage University teaches improv, and the main site also describes stand-up and sketch classes. Level 1 improv is open to adults, and the registration page lists no audition for it. Youth improv is split into grades 3 to 5 and grades 6 to 8. Sections meet in person on weekday evenings and on weekends.
The theatre sits at 569 Ezzard St SE, Atlanta 30312, and the company also runs a second venue, React Theatre, at 572 Edgewood Ave SE. Browse sections on the Dad’s Garage registration site.
Whole World Improv Theatre
Whole World offers improv from beginner to advanced for adults, a musical improv master class, youth and teen improv and summer camps. Beginner Improv needs no experience, while Intermediate and Advanced require the previous level. Youth and Teen Beginner Improv is for ages 11 to 17, and there is an X-Group for neurodiverse children and teens.
Adult series run 10 weeks on evenings and weekends, and the school also offers two-hour one-day workshops and a virtual classroom. The theatre is at 1216 Spring St NW, Atlanta 30309. Graduates of the youth program also put on a free monthly show, Improvius Prime, on the first Saturday from November to May. Details are on the Whole World classes page.

Alliance Theatre classes and camps
The Alliance, a regional theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center on Peachtree Street, teaches Acting I Foundation, Scene Study, Audition Prep, Film I to III, Film Scene Studio and voice-over audiobook narration for adults. You do not need experience to begin. Kids and teens have their own tracks, including an audition-based Teen Ensemble for rising high school juniors and seniors.
Classes meet in person on evenings and weekends, and the theatre also posts free one-off workshops such as Free Acting Basics and Free Improv. Its listing pages show session counts but we could not confirm exact 2026 or 2027 start dates, so check the Alliance adult classes page before planning around a date.
For learning how a film set works
Atlanta Film Society education program
This is a film nonprofit, not an acting school, and it is worth knowing the difference. Its education page lists a four-hour acting workshop called “Truth in Acting: Mastering Authentic Characters”, a short filmmaking workshop and CineCamp ATL for teens in rising grades 9 to 12. The PA Academy, a set-readiness training, has a Winter 2027 edition starting January 23, 2027.
Beginners and working film people are both welcome. There is also a free monthly networking night, “Eat, Drink & B-Indie”, on the third Tuesday at Manuel’s Tavern. See the Atlanta Film Society education page.
How to compare acting classes in Atlanta
When you compare acting classes Atlanta schools run, ask each school three things. First, does the class end with material you can use, such as a taped scene? Second, how many students share the room? Third, can you watch or audit a session? Atlanta Workshop Players offers that last one, and many other schools will answer by email.
Then think about your commute. Atlanta traffic is real, and an 8-week class that meets across town can turn into a chore by week four. Pick a school you can reach on a weekday evening without dread.
After the class: what to do next
Acting classes Atlanta offers are only part of the plan. Once you have a few weeks of work behind you, put it to use. Update your acting resume and get headshots that look like you. Practice a self-tape, since so much casting happens that way. Then read our guide to auditions in Atlanta and browse the open calls on our United States castings page.
If you are curious about working as an extra while you train, see how to become a background actor. For union questions down the road, the official SAG-AFTRA site is the place to start. You can also compare notes with our guides to acting classes in Los Angeles and New York.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need experience to join an Atlanta acting class?
At most schools, you can start from zero. Catapult’s On-Camera Baseline, the Alliance’s Acting I Foundation and Whole World’s Beginner Improv all list no prior experience. Upper levels often require the previous level or an invitation.
Which class is best for film and TV auditions?
Look for on-camera work with audition technique and taping, which Catapult and Atlanta Workshop Players both teach. The Alliance also lists Audition Prep and a Film series, and Aurora has a Film Acting class for ages 16 and up.
Can teenagers take acting classes in Atlanta?
Yes. Catapult has youth classes for ages 4 to 17, Whole World has teen improv for ages 11 to 17, and the Alliance runs an audition-based Teen Ensemble. Atlanta Film Society’s CineCamp ATL is for rising 9th to 12th graders.
Are there online options?
Some. Catapult lists online classes and coaching, and Whole World has a virtual classroom for adults and kids. Check each page for what is currently offered.
Are all these schools inside the city of Atlanta?
Not all. Atlanta Workshop Players is in Roswell and Aurora Theatre is in Lawrenceville. The others are in Atlanta itself.
