What they are looking for
NYC Children's Theater is casting Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker Prince in “My First Nutcracker,” a 60-minute take on the holiday classic for kids ages 3 to 8, written by Barbara Zinn Krieger and directed and choreographed by Kristen Brooks Sandler. The production is gender expansive, so performers of any gender, ethnicity or body type can submit. They want highly skilled dancers trained in ballet and contemporary who are also confident actors, since the show has spoken text, plus partnering skills and tumbling as a bonus. It is non-union and casting right away. Rehearsals run November 13 to 29, with performances December 5 to 22 at Theatre Row. It is paid, $950 per week for 5 weeks, or $4,750 total. Apply through the original listing.
Castina's tip
Show both things they want at once: a short video where you dance a ballet or contemporary phrase and then deliver a few lines to camera, as if you were talking to a five-year-old. Drosselmeyer is part magician and part storyteller, so a warm, slightly mysterious tone works best, without overdoing it. If you have partnering or tumbling experience, put it at the top of your resume. Rehearsals start November 13, so send everything soon and make sure all of December is clear.
