What they are looking for
Shpiel Theatre is staging 75 Minutes, a non-union musical comedy that retells the Book of Esther as a TV news broadcast, with parodies of pop, rock and Broadway songs. Roles include leads Ahasuerus, Mordechai, Haman and Esther, plus Queen Vashti, the eunuch guards, a news team and a court ensemble, with casting open across genders. Auditions are December 20, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, and December 21, from 6:30 to 9 PM. Sing an upbeat song, read scenes cold and do basic choreography. Rehearsals run January 31 to March 11, and performances are in March. It is unpaid. Reserve a slot online and bring your form and headshot. Apply through the original listing.
Castina's tip
Bring an upbeat song in your key, with sheet music if possible, and mark a section that shows off your comic timing. It helps to review the story of Esther and watch how TV news anchors talk, because the humor comes from that mix. Print the form and headshot before you go, since they ask for both at the audition. Check that you can rehearse Sunday mornings and Monday and Thursday evenings for about six weeks.
