Acting Classes Dallas: Studios, Improv, Theaters and College

Casting and Acting Editorial Team 9 min read Updated

In this article

Quick answer: acting classes Dallas actors can take include Playground Acting Program adult courses, Performer’s Edge group classes, improv at Dallas Comedy Club and youth programs at Dallas Theater Center and Dallas Children’s Theater. Dallas College offers a drama track for credit. Check each school’s page for the next term.

Dallas is a metroplex, not a single neighborhood. A class in Deep Ellum, one in Frisco and one in Uptown can sit an hour apart at rush hour. So the first thing to decide is not which school, but which side of town you can reach every week.

This guide lists ten places with official sites that show acting classes now: independent studios, an improv club, theaters with education programs, a conservatory, an online school and a college. It does not rank them. Rather, they are options to test against your goals. For a method you can use anywhere, read our guide to choosing acting classes.

The scene for acting classes in Dallas

Dallas training is spread across the metroplex. The Playground works out of a studio shared with Teatro Dallas, the comedy club is in Deep Ellum, and Theatre Three is on Laclede Street. Meanwhile, Frisco and Plano families have Star On and the Dallas Conservatory campus close by.

That spread has a good side. For example, you can pair an improv level in the evening with a camera or scene class on a weekend. Then you can add a private coach before an audition. Many actors build their training this way over a year or two, and it keeps any single school from becoming a habit instead of a plan.

Texas also has its own audition market, so training here connects to real work. Our guide to auditions in Texas shows how it works. A class gives you the skills, while the audition guide shows where to use them.

Start with the kind of acting classes Dallas offers

The schools below fall into four groups. First, studios teach camera and scene work in small groups. Second, improv clubs run levels, one after another. Theaters with academies lean toward young actors and the stage. Finally, colleges give you credits.

Match the type to your goal. Want to lose your nerves? Pick improv. Need a taped scene or a monologue for an agent? Pick a studio that films you. Planning a college degree? Look at the Dallas College path. If you are new, an improv level or an introductory studio class is the lowest-risk start. Because you will meet a teacher and a room full of beginners, you learn fast whether this is for you. If you already have training, a scene study or audition class will stretch you more.

Studios and coaches for acting classes in Dallas

The Playground Acting Program

The Playground offers acting classes for adults and youth in partnership with Teatro Dallas. Classes meet at the Teatro Dallas Studio, 1230 River Bend Dr., Suite 111, Dallas 75247. The list includes, for example, Acting Technique I and II, group improv classes, a monthly improv night, one-on-one classes and a kids’ summer camp.

The site also posts adult intensives for ages 18 and up. One recent example is a one-week scene study intensive that ends with a showcase for invited guests. However, the page gives no age ranges for youth classes, so ask before you enroll a child. Start at The Playground Dallas.

The Performer’s Edge

The Performer’s Edge runs group acting classes for adults 18 and over on weekday evenings, plus a Saturday acting and filmmaking class for adults and youth 16 and up. Kids and teens have Friday classes: one for ages 12 and under, another for ages 12 to 15. Those youth classes split their time, with the first and third Fridays in person at the Dallas Studio and the second and fourth online.

Students audit a class before joining, and then coaches decide placement. That trial helps you see the teaching before you commit. Private lessons are available in person or online. Because the page lists no street address, ask where the studio is. See the Performer’s Edge classes page.

Star On Acting Studio

Star On is based in Frisco and serves Plano, McKinney, Prosper and North Dallas. It offers group acting classes for kids ages 8 to 17 and adults 17 and older. Small group classes are limited to three or four students, and private lessons run in person or online. Public speaking is also part of the mix, which helps if you freeze when you present.

The home page says fall classes are open and that classes run year-round. Visit Star On Acting Studio.

Improv acting classes in Dallas

Dallas Comedy Club Training Center

The club sits in Deep Ellum, and classes meet at its Training Center at 3036 Elm Street, Dallas 75226. It teaches improv, sketch, stand-up and storytelling, plus youth classes and camps. Also, each track starts at Level One. Courses usually meet once a week for three hours over eight weeks, and core classes end with a graduation show.

Level 1 courses have no prerequisites, and the home page mentions a free Improv 101 workshop. Only enrolled students may attend, so guests and auditors are not allowed. However, the free workshop is a low-risk way to try the room. Read the Training Center FAQs before you sign up. The main site is Dallas Comedy Club.

Theaters with acting classes in Dallas

Theatre Three

Theatre Three is at 2688 Laclede St., #120, Dallas 75201. Its Enrich page lists a Michael Chekhov workshop for adult actors, professional or novice, and monthly Monday Fight Nights, which are 90-minute classes on stage combat, intimacy or movement. The same menu names an improv class and a Commedia dell’Arte weekend workshop.

The page posts no dates, so confirm the schedule with the theater. See the Theatre Three Enrich page.

Dallas Theater Center Next Stage

Next Stage is Dallas Theater Center’s after-school program for young actors. Its 2026-27 offerings include an original-musical workshop for ages 10 to 15 with no experience needed, a studio production for ages 10 to 18 and an acting-for-the-stage training program for ages 8 to 18. Rehearsals and classes meet at the Kalita Humphreys Theater campus.

Also, younger performers may be considered for the studio production through a recorded audition. Read the Next Stage page for the current list.

Dallas Children’s Theater Academy

The Academy is at 5938 Skillman St., Dallas 75231. Its class types include audition, comedy, improv, musical theater, voice and sensory-friendly classes, for Pre-K through 12th grade. Classes are structured by age and experience, so a first-timer is not placed with veterans. Its page also mentions summer registration. However, no sessions were posted when we checked, so look again closer to enrollment. Browse the Academy class list.

The Dallas Conservatory

The Conservatory teaches theatre to ages 5 through adult, with annual performance chances from age 8. Its 2026-27 schedule leans on musical theatre and creative drama, and the Frisco campus has an acting company that stages winter and spring shows. Campuses are at 7979 Inwood Road in Dallas and 6106 Frisco Square Blvd. in Frisco. Details are on the Dallas Conservatory theatre page.

College acting classes in Dallas

Dallas College Drama

Dallas College offers drama at Brookhaven, Eastfield, Mountain View, North Lake and Richland, and offerings vary by campus. Courses cover acting, voice, movement and script analysis, and students can prepare to transfer to a four-year program. The college stages more than 20 theater and dance productions each year, with auditions held throughout the year.

This is the pick for you if you want credit, not a drop-in. Because offerings vary by campus, check which campus teaches the courses you want, and then ask about the audition dates for the next production. Start with the Dallas College drama page.

Online acting classes in Dallas

If traffic wins, study from home. Online classes also help if you live outside the city and plan to visit later. Green Room Acting Studio says it serves the Dallas area and teaches live Zoom classes for kids, teens and adults. Its list includes scene study, self-taping techniques, foundations of method acting and script analysis, and it offers a one-time trial class. The Performer’s Edge and Star On also coach online. See the Green Room Acting Studio page and our guide to online acting classes.

How to test acting classes in Dallas before you commit

First, ask to watch a session or take the shortest course first. Then compare two schools before you pay for a full term. Notice how the teacher gives feedback. Good notes are specific, so you should be able to act on them by next week. Also ask what the last class looks like, because a showcase, a taped scene and a graduation show each prepare you for something different.

For young actors, visit in person. Ask who teaches, how many adults are in the room and how parents can see what happens. Our guide to becoming an actor as a teenager has a longer list. If you are weighing a bigger commitment, read about acting schools and whether you need acting school.

Voice is another thread to pull. A few schools list voice work, and a separate voice class can help your reads sound natural on tape. Our guide to voice acting classes covers that path.

From class to audition

After a course, prepare two monologues and look for work. Our guide to auditions in Texas explains the state, and the United States castings page lists open calls. You can also browse all castings.

Heading south? Read our guide to acting classes in Houston. For more cities, see acting classes near me. The actors’ union is SAG-AFTRA.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a beginner start in Dallas?

Try a Level One improv class at Dallas Comedy Club, or ask The Playground about Acting Technique I. Star On also welcomes new students.

Are there acting classes in Dallas for kids and teens?

Yes. Dallas Children’s Theater serves Pre-K through 12th grade, Next Stage serves ages 8 to 18, and The Performer’s Edge has Friday classes for ages 5 to 15. The Dallas Conservatory teaches ages 5 and up.

Do any of these classes require an audition?

Some do. Next Stage may use a recorded audition for younger performers in its studio production, and The Performer’s Edge has youth students audit a class first. Ask each school, since rules change.

Can I take classes online?

Yes. Green Room teaches by live Zoom, and The Performer’s Edge and Star On both offer online private lessons.

How do I choose between a studio and a college?

Choose a studio if you want short courses and camera practice. Choose Dallas College if you want credits toward a degree. You can also do both, because many actors take a studio class while they study.

Star On is in Frisco, and the Dallas Conservatory has a Frisco campus too. Dallas College has campuses across the county. The others list Dallas addresses.
