Acting Classes Houston: Studios, Improv and Youth Options

Casting and Acting Editorial Team 9 min read Updated

In this article

Quick answer: acting classes Houston actors can take range from on-camera studios like Spotlight Acting Academy and Next Level Acting to improv at the Houston School of Improv and a drama program at Houston Community College. Beginners, teens and working actors all have a place to start. Check each school’s page for the next term.

Houston is big and spread out, so a school that looks close on a map can mean a long drive. That matters more than most people expect. A class you can reach on a Tuesday night is worth more than a famous one you skip twice in a row.

This guide covers nine places with official sites that show acting classes today: studios, an improv school, a community college and a youth theater. It does not rank them. Instead, think of them as options to test against your schedule, your goals and your commute. If you want a method for judging any school, our guide to choosing acting classes walks through it.

The scene for acting classes in Houston

Houston does not have one training district. Instead, the options are scattered: two studios share Heights Boulevard, another sits in Midtown, a third is near Robinhood Street, and the improv school is on Jones Road. Families in Katy and The Woodlands have their own branches.

That spread has a good side. You can mix and match. For example, you might take a camera class at one studio and an improv level at another, then add a private coach before a big audition. Many actors build their training this way over a year or two.

The work itself is not limited to Houston. Texas has its own audition market, and you can read how it works in our guide to auditions in Texas. A class gives you the skills, but the audition guide shows where to use them.

How to choose acting classes in Houston

Start with a plain question: what do you want the class to do for you? Some people want to lose their nerves in front of other people. Others need a taped scene for an agent, or a monologue for a college audition. Each goal points to a different kind of school.

  • If you have never acted, look for a foundations class or an improv level one.
  • If you want screen work, pick a studio that films you and shows you the playback.
  • If you are applying to a college program, look for audition prep.
  • If you are a parent, check the age groups, the class size and who is in the room.

Next, look at the map. Houston has clusters, so find the one near your home or office. The Heights, Midtown, the area around Robinhood Street and the northwest side all show up below. Katy and The Woodlands matter too if you live in the suburbs.

Acting classes in Houston studios for adults and teens

Studios are where most adults start. They tend to run short sessions, small groups and rolling enrollment, which makes it easy to try one before you commit.

Next Level Acting

Next Level Acting teaches adults, youths and teens of all experience levels in Houston and The Woodlands, and it also gives private lessons. Adult classes cover camera work such as close-ups, tracking and hitting marks. They also prepare you for casting director pre-reads, on-camera auditions and producer callbacks. Youth and teen classes use camera work, mock auditions and improv.

The schedule page lists classes at both locations and one evening class on Zoom. It gives no street addresses, so confirm the room before you drive. Start on the Next Level Acting site.

Next Actor Studio

Next Actor Studio runs film and TV acting classes built on the Stanislavski method. Its menu also lists voice acting, improvisation, teen and kids classes, screenwriting, filmmaking and a one-day workshop. Group classes meet in person at 2525 Robinhood Street, Houston 77005, and the site says online classes can be arranged by email. It says walk-ins are not accepted, so write or call first.

The same school has a Los Angeles studio, which is handy if you plan to move later. See the Next Actor Studio site.

Studio for Actors Houston

Studio for Actors Houston sits at 1218 Heights Boulevard. Its adult list includes Acting I, Film Acting I, Improv for Actors, a Musical Theatre Songbook class and college audition prep. The professional classes page adds Freeing the Voice, Shakespeare fundamentals and unarmed stage combat. Youth programs include Acting for Teens and summer studios.

Because the catalog is wide, you can stay in one place as your goals change. Browse the Studio for Actors Houston classes page.

The Studio with Patricia Duran

This studio is also in the Heights, at 1703 Heights Boulevard. Its open-enrollment list includes Acting Foundations, a four-week course that covers theatre games, ensemble work, voice, movement, and monologue and scene work. Other classes include Audition Technique, Scene Study, Uta Hagen technique and a physical-theatre class that touches on clown, mask and commedia dell’arte.

The studio also offers one-on-one coaching for teens, adults and experienced actors, with online sessions for people outside Houston. Teen and young actor classes, plus HSPVA audition prep, are named on the page. Check the Patricia Duran studio page for the next session.

Spotlight Acting Academy

Spotlight focuses on on-camera acting for film and TV. It has youth classes for ages 8 to 14, teen classes for ages 15 to 18 and adult classes for ages 18 and up. Enrollment is rolling, so you can join at any time, and class sizes run from 8 to 14 students. Private lessons and self-tape sessions are also listed.

There are two studios: 4118 Fannin, Suite 210, in Midtown, and 21412 Provincial Blvd. in Katy. That second address helps families west of the city. See the Spotlight Acting Academy Houston page.

Page Parkes Houston

Page Parkes lists several Houston courses by age group. On Camera Commercial Acting and Film Acting Technique each run eight weekly two-hour sessions, and Film Acting Technique ends with a photo shoot. Monologue Intensive and Improvisation Workshop are shorter, at four sessions. A kids’ workshop for ages 5 to 7 ends with a photo shoot and a mock audition.

The Houston page does not list a street address, so ask where classes meet. Details are on the Page Parkes Houston page.

Improv acting classes in Houston

Houston School of Improv

The school runs out of ComedySportz Houston at 8301 Jones Road, Houston 77065. Every student starts on the Core Track, which has four levels of eight weeks each, for ages 18 and up. Level One, Intro to Improv, has no prerequisites. Levels Two to Four cover characters and stories, intermediate scene work and advanced short form.

After Level Three, you can move into long form, musical improv or masterclasses. The site also mentions a high school league and kids’ summer camps. Improv trains the listening you will need in every scene, so it pairs well with a camera class. Read the Houston School of Improv classes page and the calendar for the next start date.

Community college acting classes in Houston

Houston Community College Drama

HCC offers three Associate of Arts degrees in drama, including Drama, Performance. They are university transfer degrees of at least 60 credit hours, about two years full time, in person or hybrid. The page says the program is available at all campuses. This path suits you if you want credits that transfer to a four-year school, not a drop-in class.

Individual courses are not listed on that page, so open the degree plan in the college catalog. Start at the HCC Drama program page.

Acting classes in Houston for kids and teens

Several studios above already serve young actors. Spotlight splits its classes by age, Next Level Acting and Studio for Actors Houston have teen programs, and Page Parkes starts at age 5. One more option is a youth theater.

HITS Theatre

HITS Theatre is a nonprofit in the Houston Heights, at 311 W. 18th Street. It teaches theatre arts to students in grades K to 12, with classes in acting, singing, dancing and production. The site names no class titles on its home page, so ask which group fits your child. See the HITS Theatre site.

For safety, visit before you sign up. Ask who teaches, whether two adults are in the room and how parents can watch. Our guide to becoming an actor as a teenager has more to check.

Online and private acting classes in Houston

Traffic is real in Houston, so online work helps. Next Level Acting lists a Zoom class, Next Actor Studio schedules online classes by email, and the Patricia Duran studio coaches online. Our guide to online acting classes shows how to judge them. If your goal is voice work, read about voice acting classes.

Try a class before you commit

Most of these schools let you start small. Ask to observe a session, or pick the shortest course first. Then see how the teacher handles feedback. A good teacher gives you something specific to fix by next week.

Also ask what the last class looks like. A showcase, a taped scene and a monologue each prepare you for something different. Our guide to whether you need acting school can help you decide how much training is enough. For a wider view, browse acting schools across the country.

From class to audition

When a course ends, get your materials ready. Prepare two monologues and start looking for work. Our guide to auditions in Texas covers the state, and the United States castings page lists open calls. You can also browse all castings.

Heading north? Our guide to acting classes in Dallas covers that side of Texas, and acting classes near me covers more cities. The actors’ union is SAG-AFTRA.
