Quick answer: in Argentina you can study acting for free at public institutions: the UNA’s bachelor’s degree in Acting and the EMAD, both in the City of Buenos Aires, plus the Escuela de Teatro de La Plata, the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and two provincial schools in Rosario. If you want drama classes with no requirements, studios such as Timbre 4, Andamio 90 and Nora Moseinco’s school run year-long workshops, and the cultural centers of the Programa Cultural en Barrios offer free ones.
Degree programs require a high school diploma, take three to five years and lead to an official qualification. A taller (an acting workshop or class), on the other hand, has no requirements and meets once a week. Below are the options we verified on each school’s official website, with how admission works and what they cost.
Two dates to write down: enrollment for 2027 at the UNA runs from October 26 to November 6, 2026, and pre-enrollment for Theater at the UNC (Universidad Nacional de Córdoba) runs from October 26 to December 4, 2026.
Free acting degrees in Buenos Aires
Licenciatura en Actuación at the UNA
At the UNA (Universidad Nacional de las Artes), Argentina’s national arts university, the Departamento de Artes Dramáticas (drama department) offers the Licenciatura en Actuación: a five-year bachelor’s degree in Acting, with an intermediate Actor or Actress title after the third year. It’s free and has no entrance test: all it takes is a high school diploma, signing up on time and passing the CINO, the introductory cycle, which includes two acting courses, voice, body and two general seminars.
You can take the CINO as an intensive course in February and March at French 3614, in the morning, afternoon or evening, or over two four-month terms (cuatrimestres) at Mitre 1869. Enrollment for 2027 runs from October 26 to November 6, 2026. The department’s history goes back to a conservatory founded in 1924. You’ll find everything on the Ingreso 2027 (2027 admissions) page.
If you’d rather skip the full degree, the UNA runs the Cursos Equis: four-month workshops for kids, teens, adults, experienced adults and seniors, with open enrollment and online pre-registration. They cost ARS 40,000 a month (October and November 2026), with discounts available. More information on the extension courses page.
EMAD
The EMAD (Escuela Metropolitana de Arte Dramático), Buenos Aires’ city drama school, is public and free, apart from a bono de cooperadora (a small voluntary contribution to the school’s support association). It has been running since 1965 at Sarmiento 2573 and grew out of a course for teenagers at the Instituto Labardén. Its program, Formación del Actor y la Actriz (actor and actress training), takes four years, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Unlike the UNA, it has an entrance test. For the 2026 school year, online pre-registration ran from December 5, 2025 to February 9, 2026, with an information session on February 18, and admission took place in groups: a reading exam on an assigned play, an acting test with a monologue chosen from a list set by the school, and a voice and body assessment. None of the stages ruled anyone out on its own, and up to 25 people got in per shift. As of October 22, 2026, the call for 2027 had not been published yet.
The EMAD also offers a free two-year course in acting in open spaces. More information on the Formación del Actor y la Actriz page.
Escuela de Teatro de La Plata
The Escuela de Teatro de La Plata (ETLP) is public and free, with 641 students across three shifts. It was founded in 1948 as the Conservatorio de Música y Arte Escénico. It offers a three-year Tecnicatura en Actuación (a technical degree in Acting), a four-year Profesorado (a teaching degree) and a two-year program for teenagers ages 14 to 17. Admission is direct, with no age limit and no previous experience required: if more people sign up than there are places, spots are assigned by lottery. More information in its FAQ.
Instituto Municipal de Teatro de Avellaneda (IMTA)
In the conurbano (Greater Buenos Aires), the IMTA (Alsina 157, Avellaneda) offers a Tecnicatura en Actuación with one year of basic training plus three more, Monday to Friday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and a two-year training program for actor-puppeteers. For the degree you need a high school diploma and an apto físico (a medical fitness certificate). It also has workshops for children from age 3 and for adults, with enrollment in February and March and from August 15. More information on the municipality’s page.
Theater degrees in Córdoba and Rosario
Departamento de Teatro at the UNC (Córdoba)
The Facultad de Artes (school of arts) of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba offers two free programs: the Licenciatura en Teatro con orientación en Actuación (a five-year bachelor’s degree in Theater with a focus on Acting) and the Profesorado de Teatro (a four-year theater teaching degree), both at the Pabellón México building on the Ciudad Universitaria campus. Pre-enrollment for 2027 runs from October 26 to December 4, 2026, and the admission process starts in February 2027. Theater has been taught at the UNC since the 1960s: the dictatorship closed the department in 1976, and it reopened in 1986. More information in the enrollment requirements.
Seminario de Teatro Jolie Libois (Córdoba)
Run by the Province of Córdoba, the Seminario offers three years of acting training with official certification. It grew out of a course taught by the actress Jolie Libois in 1968, and the first enrollment took place in 1969. For the 2026 school year, enrollment was open until December 20, 2025 and again from February 16 to 26, 2026. More information in the enrollment announcement.
Provincial schools in Rosario
In Rosario, the national university (UNR) doesn’t offer a theater degree, so the public options are two provincial schools, both of them free.
- Escuela Provincial de Teatro y Títeres N.º 5029 (Viamonte 1993): four-year programs in Acting, Directing, Theater Teaching and Teaching with a focus on Puppetry. Instead of an entrance exam there’s a short preparatory course (cursillo propedéutico), and you’ll need a hearing test (audiometry) and a laryngoscopy. Founded in 1974 as the Escuela Nacional de Títeres (national puppetry school), it added Acting in 1986. More information on its admissions page.
- Escuela Provincial de Teatro Ambrosio Morante (Leandro N. Alem 3084, 5th floor): a three-year Actor or Actress program, with afternoon or evening classes. To enroll you need your DNI (Argentina’s national identity document), a high school diploma and a health certificate, and there’s an annual cooperadora contribution. It has been running since May 1984. More information on the program page.
Private acting workshops and drama schools in Buenos Aires
If you want to take drama classes without enrolling in a degree program, these studios offer year-long workshops, and several of them are based in venues of Buenos Aires’ independent theater scene. You’ll need to ask each place for its prices, since none of them publish them.
Timbre 4
The school of Claudio Tolcachir’s theater company runs year-long, in-person workshops for kids, preteens, teens and adults, in the Boedo neighborhood (Av. Boedo 640 and México 3554) and in Florida, in the zona norte or northern suburbs (Laprida 2731). To join, you fill out a form and attend an information session or an interview, and the school is already announcing its 2027 workshops. The company was founded in 1999 and opened its own space in 2001. More information on the school’s page.
Andamio 90
Founded in 1990 by Alejandra Boero and located at Paraná 662, Andamio 90 offers programs with an official degree (the three-year Tecnicatura en Actuación and the four-year Profesorado) and a year-long workshop from March to December, four hours a week, plus an intensive option from August to December. The workshop counts as credit if you later enroll in the degree program, and there’s a 100% online theory course. More information on the acting workshop page.
Nora Moseinco’s school
Founded in 1995 and located at Caldas 1425, the school runs year-long workshops from January to December for kids ages 8 to 11, preteens 11 to 13, teens 14 to 17 and adults, with classes lasting two to two and a half hours. You can join at any time of year if there’s an opening, and the annual enrollment fee equals one installment (half of one if you join in the second half of the year). Alumni include Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Inés Efrón and Lorena Vega, and Nora teaches remote classes for people who live in the provinces, outside Buenos Aires. More information on the school’s website.
Other options
- Estudio de Julio Chávez: acting training with Julio Chávez himself. The 2026 spots are full, and enrollment for 2027 opens on January 15. More information on its enrollment page.
- El Camarín de las Musas (Mario Bravo 960): a theater school inside an independent venue, with workshops for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, plus groups for kids and teens. More information on the theater school page.
Free acting classes in Buenos Aires
Besides the public degree programs, the City of Buenos Aires has two programs where you can take drama classes:
- Programa Cultural en Barrios: free workshops at neighborhood cultural centers, one day a week, lasting one to three and a half hours depending on the center. Enrollment happens once a year through an online form, and your spot is confirmed by email. By our count of the official 2026 schedule, 31 of the 34 centers offered theater, clown or improv, with beginner, advanced and children’s groups. More information on the program’s schedule page.
- Instituto Vocacional de Arte Labardén: for kids and teens, with theater, visual arts and music by level (ages 6 to 12, 13 to 15, and a specialization from age 16). It began in 1913 as the Teatro Municipal Infantil (municipal children’s theater). Enrollment for 2027 ran from October 1 to 20, 2026. More information on the institute’s website.
The Complejo Teatral de Buenos Aires, the theater complex that includes the Teatro San Martín, has a free workshop-school for puppeteers and a school of theater trades, but it doesn’t have an acting school.

Degree or workshop: which one is right for you
Ley 27.204 (Argentina’s law on free public higher education) states that undergraduate programs at state institutions are free and that people over 25 without a high school diploma can get in through an assessment; the UNC, for example, has a track for applicants over 25. Even so, arts schools limit their places: the EMAD takes up to 25 people per shift, and the Escuela de Teatro de La Plata holds a lottery when there are more applicants than places.
If you want to try it out before committing to a degree that takes three to five years, a workshop is a good way in: the ones at private studios start in March, and many have a second start date in August. At Andamio 90, the workshop also counts as credit toward the degree. And if you’re wondering whether you need to study to work as an actor, we answer that in do you need acting school?
