What they are looking for
Trenchant Productions, Gary D. Cole's producing company, is premiering Newsboy, a new play based on his memoir about his childhood paper route in 1960s and 70s Chicagoland, directed by Iris Sowlat. They are casting two actors: one age 12 or older to play Gary from 9 to 12, and one age 16 or older to play him from 13 to 15, both with strong storytelling, comic timing and a lot of text to memorize. It is non-union and it is paid, with a $2,500 stipend for each lead and $1,000 for understudies. Rehearsals start July 6, 2027, and performances run in September and October at Piven Theatre in Evanston. Email a headshot and resume, then send a video of the side by December 15. Apply through the original listing.
Castina's tip
This is close to a solo show told straight to the audience, so your video should prove you can hold a story while talking to the camera like it is the house. For Older Gary, pick a one minute monologue that mixes humor with a serious turn. Reading about late 1960s Chicago gives you context. Before you commit, make sure you are free evenings and Saturdays from July and for the January 16 callback.
