Casting calls in Chicago: what to know

In Chicago, theater and screen work sit side by side, so casting calls arrive two ways. Theater companies post their auditions in listings such as Theatre in Chicago, which has separate tabs for Equity, non-Equity and film calls. For screen and commercial work, build profiles on Actors Access and Casting Networks and sign up with local casting offices.

Always check whether a role is union or non-union, because it changes how you sign up. Actors’ Equity, the union for professional stage actors, has an Audition Center in Chicago. Some large theaters, such as Goodman and Steppenwolf, also see non-members at their Equity auditions when time allows.

Have your headshot, resume and reel ready. If you live outside the United States, look into your work authorization first. Check each call's deadline, too. For more detail, read Auditions in Chicago, and to train in the city, see our guide to acting classes in Chicago.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply to casting calls in Chicago?

Open the casting call you are interested in: each one has its own page with the role and the closing date. For listings from production companies and agencies, you apply through the original post. For Casting and Acting community calls, you apply right on the page with your account.

Are casting calls in Chicago paid?

It depends on each casting call, so read the listing carefully before you submit. A legitimate casting never charges you to take part. If they ask for money to sign up, for headshots or for a mandatory class, it is a scam. How to spot a fake casting call.

How often are new casting calls added?

The page is updated every day with open casting calls, and the ones that close drop off the list. To hear about new ones in United States as soon as they open, turn on email alerts: you get one email a day, only when there are new casting calls.

Do I need experience or an agent?

Many casting calls accept people with no experience, especially commercials, film school shorts and independent theater. Each listing spells out the profile they want. Having your headshots, resume and a short video ready helps you submit fast.

Are there online auditions?

Yes, more and more: many casting calls ask for a self-tape, a scene you record at home with your phone, and only then call people in for an in-person audition. If the listing asks for one, send it before the deadline, with good light and clear sound. How to record a self-tape.
