Acting Classes Austin: Improv, Meisner and Theater Options

In this article

Quick answer: acting classes Austin offers lean toward improv and theater. The Hideout Theatre and ColdTowne teach improv, In the Moment Acting Studio teaches Meisner, and Zach Theatre runs adult classes in acting for film and musical theater. Colleges add degree paths. Check each school’s page for the next term.

Austin trains actors in small rooms. The Hideout Theatre, for example, seats 35, so students learn close to the audience. Improv, sketch, Meisner and college theater all share the same city, and that variety makes the first choice harder than it looks.

This guide to acting classes Austin students can take covers nine places that describe current programs on their official sites. It does not rank them. Instead, it gives you the facts we could confirm, so you can match a school to your goals, your schedule and your commute. Our guide to choosing acting classes explains how to judge any of them.

How to choose acting classes in Austin

Start with one question: what do you want to do after the class? Improv builds listening and nerve fast. Meisner work trains you to react honestly to a partner. A college program gives you years of structure, but it asks for an audition and a bigger commitment.

Then look at the practical side. Check the neighborhood, because a class across town gets hard to keep attending. Ask whether a first session is free or open to visitors. Finally, find out what the last class looks like. A showcase, a recorded scene and a stage show each prepare you for different work.

Austin schools post their schedules on their own sites and change them often. We do not list terms, tuition or dates here for that reason. Always read the school’s page for the next term before you plan around a class.

Improv acting classes in Austin

Improv is the easiest door into the city’s scene. It costs little in nerves, and it teaches skills that carry into scene work and auditions.

The Hideout Theatre

The Hideout’s classes follow a ladder. A free intro class is described as a 90-minute taste of the in-person classes. After that come Level One and higher levels. Level Four, for instance, is a scene performance class that meets for six weekly three-hour sessions and is limited to 12 students. Level Five students put together self-directed shows in formats such as Theatresports and Montage.

The site also lists specialty workshops and Sunday jams. Kids classes, camps and shows are offered too. The theater sits at 5555 N Lamar Blvd, Unit B103, and parking is free. Start on the Hideout Theatre site.

ColdTowne Theater

ColdTowne describes itself as the home of Austin’s Upright Citizens Brigade Training Center. It teaches comedy through that program, and the home page does not list individual class titles. The theater is at 1700 East 2nd St. The site also links to a separate youth site, so parents can look there for younger students.

If you want to compare ColdTowne with the Hideout, read both sites and ask each about a first visit. Each room has its own culture, so the classes can feel quite different. See the ColdTowne Theater site for the current list.

Meisner and acting classes in Austin

Improv trains you to say yes to a partner. The studios below, however, train you to stay truthful inside a written scene, which is what most auditions ask for.

In the Moment Acting Studio

This studio teaches the Meisner Technique, with an emphasis on responding in the moment, developing characters and auditioning. It serves beginning and advanced actors. Classes are ongoing and weekly, held on two weekday evenings and one weekday morning. Students keep the same class day, and new students join at the start of each month.

Some tracks need an interview, and the advanced and master levels are by invitation only. The studio is at 730 W. Stassney Lane, Suite 226, in South Austin. Read the details on the In the Moment Acting Studio site.

Zach Theatre adult classes

Zach’s education side serves both adults and young people. The adult list names Musical Theater, Improv, Acting for Film and Public Speaking for Working Professionals, plus more. Classes run in semester-based sessions, and new students can try a free workshop before they enroll.

Its Classes and Camps menu also lists Camps, Audition-Based Training and Zach Academy, and the site names more than one campus, including Zach North. The home page does not say which campus hosts which class, so confirm that before you commute. Browse the Zach Theatre site.

Milne Acting Studio

Milne Acting Studio International runs studios in several cities, and its site lists an Austin location at 7501 Whistlestop Dr. The only Austin offering we found there is a 48-hour acting bootcamp. Elsewhere, the studio describes in-studio and online classes. So treat Austin as a short, intensive option and ask the studio what else it runs here. The Milne Studio site has the listing.

College programs near Austin

College training suits you if you want years of structure and a degree. Each program below is separate, and each has its own entry process.

University of Texas at Austin, Department of Theatre and Dance

The department lists a B.F.A. in Acting, along with a UT Semester in Los Angeles program. Its page does not describe admission steps, so read the undergraduate admissions links before you plan. The department also runs youth summer camps and community programs, but its page does not list acting classes for non-majors. See the UT Theatre and Dance site.

Austin Community College Drama

ACC’s drama program is based at the Highland Campus, just north of downtown. Its page describes performance and technical theatre courses, an Associate of Arts, full productions, student showcases and internships with local Austin theaters. It says the program can prepare students to transfer to a four-year university or conservatory. That makes it a practical first step if you want college credit at a community college. Find it on the ACC Drama page.

Texas State University, Acting for Stage and Screen

Texas State is in San Marcos, a short drive south of Austin, so it counts as a nearby option rather than an Austin school. Its B.F.A. in Theatre Acting, called Acting for Stage and Screen, is conservatory style. Applicants must apply to both the university and the program. The program requires a prescreen audition, and only invited applicants go on to callbacks. The Division of Theatre is at 430 Moon Street. Read more on the Texas State acting page.

Match a class to your goal

A short list helps when nine options feel like too many. These pairings come straight from what each school says about itself.

  • **You have never acted:** try the Hideout’s free intro, Zach’s free workshop for new students, or a beginner track at In the Moment.
  • **You want comedy training:** look at the Hideout and ColdTowne, and read how each describes its levels.
  • **You want truthful scene work:** In the Moment’s Meisner classes and the film and musical theater classes at Zach fit here.
  • **You want a degree:** compare the UT B.F.A., Texas State’s conservatory-style program and the ACC associate degree.
  • **You have a short window:** Milne’s 48-hour bootcamp is the only intensive we found on an Austin page.

Because the Austin list leans toward improv and theater, camera-focused students may want to pair a class with self-taping practice at home. Our guide to the self-tape walks through the setup. Also remember that a class is only the start. You still need steady practice between sessions, and a scene partner helps more than any brochure.

Acting classes in Austin for kids and teens

Austin Playhouse lists an Education menu with Theatre for Youth, Stage Combat Classes and camps. One camp on its page is a winter day camp for ages 6 to 12. The page does not describe the classes in detail, so call or email the box office for ages and formats. The company performs at its West Campus venue, 405 W. 22nd St. Check the Austin Playhouse site.

The Hideout and Zach, covered above, also teach younger students. Parents should ask a few basic questions before enrolling a child anywhere. Who supervises the room? Can you watch a class? How does the school handle pickup? A good school answers these without hesitation. Our guide to acting as a teenager adds more advice for teens and parents.

Online and private options

Not every Austin schedule fits a work week. If you cannot reach a studio, our guide to online acting classes shows how to judge a live class on video. Voice work is a separate skill, and the voice acting classes guide covers it. For wider choices beyond Texas, see our list of acting schools.

Try a class before you commit

Austin makes this easy. The Hideout offers a free intro, Zach lets new students try a free workshop, and In the Moment accepts new students at the start of each month. For example, one free evening can tell you whether a teacher’s notes help you. Also ask to observe a session wherever a free trial is not listed.

Compare what you see with the class you pictured. If the teacher gives clear, kind feedback and the room feels safe, that is a good sign. If you leave confused about what you practiced, try another school. Our guide to whether you need acting school helps you decide how much training is enough.

Turn classes into auditions

After a term or two, build your materials. Start with an acting resume and a pair of monologues. Then learn the self-tape basics, because many calls today start on video.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a complete beginner start in Austin?

The Hideout’s free intro class is built for first-timers. Zach’s free workshop for new students is another gentle start, and In the Moment welcomes beginning actors.

Is Austin better for improv or for scene study?

It has both. Improv is easy to find at the Hideout and ColdTowne. However, Meisner work at In the Moment and film and musical theater classes at Zach cover the written-scene side.

Do any of these programs require an audition?

Some do. Texas State requires a prescreen audition, and In the Moment asks for an interview for some tracks. Most beginner classes list no audition.

Can I take acting classes in Austin online?

Milne lists online classes for its studio in general, but its Austin page shows a bootcamp. Check each school’s page, or read our online acting classes guide.

How do I know a class is still running?

Schools change their lineups often. Open the school’s page, look for the next term, and email or call if the page is vague. Never pay for a class before you have confirmed the start date in writing.

Are all of these schools in Austin itself?

Texas State is in San Marcos, and the rest list Austin addresses. The Zach campuses are not named by neighborhood on its home page.
